General Sir Mike Jackson was the high-profile British army head who refused to ‘start World War Three’ for his American counterpart in Kosovo and later became chief of the general staff.

Read the obituary from The Times about a man who had an enormous impact, made some hard decisions but a significant impact to military doctrine, life, policy and service to his country.

Mike Huntriss, Vice Chair of the Friends of Cheshire Military Museum knew him well enough to have supper with him a couple of times. He remembers; “I knew Mike Jackson well when he was a Lt. Col. and an instructor at the Army Staff College ay Camberley in 1982. He came to supper with us a couple of times. He was detached half way through for special ops in the Falklands. He had to make difficult decisions and I remember meeting him years later when he said his reforms were not sufficiently progressive in a time of high political defence cuts. I’m sad but have fond memories.”
